  • Bartrum and Brown Surpasses Quarter of a Million Dollars In Donations

    Huntington,WV

    February 2009

A quarter of a million dollars. That is the impressive total to date that Mike Bartrum and Troy Brown has raised through their yearly football camp and charity auction. That is $250,000 put to use in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky that has done everything from putting nails into a 2x4 to build a much needed home with Habitat for Humanity to buying school supplies and a backpack for families who have stretched their budgets to the breaking point. Proceeds from the annual camp go to youth programs and charities in the Huntington where Brown resides and in the Pomeroy, Ohio, where Bartrum lives. Other donations are made to the A.D. Lewis Community Center, New Horizons Day Care, Heroes at home, Magic at Christmas, Meigs Local Enrichment Foundation, Syracuse Fire Departments "I Believe Foundation", Foothill Music Foundation, Meigs County Agricultural Society, Angela Easom Memorial Park, and other charities in the Tri-State. In 2008 Mike and Troy started two additional annual events with their "Back To School Backpack Giveaway" in Pomeroy, Ohio and Huntington,WV as well as their own Christmas Toy Drive delivering toys to deserving kids.

On behalf of everyone involved with the Bartrum and Brown Organization Mike and Troy want to thank every single individual donor and business for helping make this charity a success. We deeply appreciate the support we have recieved over the years and continue to recieve from the people of the Tri-State area. We hope to see you at the 2009 Charity Dinner and Auction on Friday May 15th, at the Big Sandy Arena in Huntington.

    Sincere Thanks to all,

    Mike Bartrum and Troy Brown

  • Bartrum & Brown Makes Donation to Heroes at Home Program

    October 20th, 2008

    Huntington,WV

Ask Mike Bartrum or Troy Brown what the most important thing in their life is and anyone that knows them will not be suprised. It's not catching the game winning touchdown in the superbowl, it's not delivering the accurate snap that leads to the game winning kick in overtime to send your team to the NFC Championship game, and no it's not even about the rings.....any of the three. It is about family. Mike and Troy showed their support here in Huntington by making a much needed donation to the Sears "Heroes at Home" fund raiser. Heroes at Home is a program created in partnership with Rebuilding Together in response to an urgent need to assist military families facing hardship. Rebuilding Together, the nation’s largest all volunteer home rehabilitation organization, is committed to bringing warmth, safety and accessibility to homeowners who do not have the financial or physical resources to complete home repairs and other necessary improvements.

By providing necessary repairs or adaptations to homes, Sears Holdings strives to improve the lives of military families across America. Heroes at Home is one of the many initiatives through which Sears Holdings acknowledges the sacrifice made by our troops every day in the line of duty, while supporting and honoring those heroes who remain at home. Donate to Rebuilding Together or refer a veteran who may need assistance.

These are just a few of the military families Mike Bartrum and Troy Browns donation has reached out to:

    The Vanderwerts Family

In order to save money, Jonathan VanderWert and his wife Blake
of New Prague, Minnesota, moved into a dilapidated home in need
of major repair and remodeling with their nine children. In August
of 2007, their plans to fix the home were put on hold when
Sgt. VanderWert was called into active duty with the Minnesota
National Guard to serve a 15 month tour in Iraq. Many of the rooms
in the home are missing walls and ceilings, there are exposed electrical
wires, and only one bathroom is functioning. Through Heroes at Home,
Sears Holdings is helping this family by repairing the basic structure of
the home, finishing bathrooms and all bedrooms on the second floor,
repairing all exposed wiring, painting bedrooms, and upgrading the
kitchen. The VanderWerts also received a set of appliances for their
home during a special event to celebrate Veterans Day on November 9.
The VanderWerts are one of more than 100 military families to benefit

from this program through the holiday season.

    Ryan Major

Army Sergeant Ryan C. Major, 21, of Silver Spring, Maryland, is the first
beneficiary of Heroes at Home. Sergeant Major is currently recovering
from severe wounds he received when an improvised explosive device
detonated while he was on patrol in Iraq. Heroes at Home provided
Ryan with a wheelchair accessible bedroom, bathroom and elevator.
Volunteers from Sears and Kmart, along with Rebuilding Together's
Montgomery County affiliate, honored Sergeant Major during an event

    last Spring.

    Robert LaMarche

Robert LaMarche enrolled in the Army immediately after high school.
After being deployed to Iraq, he was struck by a bullet in the neck,
resulting in permanent paralysis from the neck down. Mr. LaMarche's
community in Green Bay, Wisconsin, answered the call to action in the
months that followed his recovery. After being referred by the local Sears
store, the Heroes at Home program was able to provide wheelchair friendly
flooring, new windows and new siding to Mr. LaMarche's home through

    heroes at home.

  • Back To School with Bartrum & Brown

    Friday, August 22, 2008 5:24 PM CDT
    The Daily Sentinel

MASON, W.Va. - This year, going back to school was a little different for 50 local kids who received free, custom backpacks, school supplies and autographs of professional football players, Mike Bartrum and Troy Brown.

Using money raised from their Bartrum-Brown Foundation, the two men partnered with the Mason, W.Va. Wal-Mart which also assisted in providing the goodies. Bartrum and Brown provided free, custom backpacks with the “B&B” logo while Wal-Mart filled the packs with free school supplies.

The lucky kids were chosen for the special autograph session and giveaway by nonprofit organizations and school districts. There were 25 chosen from West Virginia and 25 from Ohio.

Bartrum and Brown, who were teammates at Marshall University, formed the Bartrum & Brown Football Camp more than 10 years ago as a nonprofit organization devoted to enriching the lives of children. Proceeds from the annual camp and fundraising events, including the charity dinner auction and celebrity golf tournament, go to youth programs and charities in the Huntington, W.Va. area, which is where Troy and his family reside, as well as the Pomeroy area, where Mike and his family reside. The backpack giveaway and autograph session is an example of one way the foundation dollars are spent locally. Bartrum, now retired from the NFL, was widely regarded as one of the league's best long snappers. Brown is a 15-year NFL veteran, member of the 2002, 2004 and 2005 Super Bowl champion Patriots and an All Pro.

  • Bartrum and Brown Camp a Big Hit with Kids

    Posted Sunday, May 18, 2008 ; 04:21 PM

The annual camp drew in hundreds of youngsters to Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

    Story by Jared Fialko

MARSHALL -- Two of Marshall University's proud sons continue to outdo themselves, year after year.

13-year NFL veteran Mike Bartrum and New England Patriots' all-time leading receiver Troy Brown welcomed in hundreds of kids, and even more parents, to Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Saturday.

The former Herd standouts didn't come alone.

Another Pro Bowl-like roster joined the duo as guest instructors, teaching kids some tools of the pigskin trade.

Former Marshall stars like Andre O'Neal and Nate McPeek were on-hand, as well as Jack Lengyel and Red Dawson, the coaching staff from the Young Thundering Herd squad of 1971.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook and Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel may not have graduated from Marshall, but after spending a day at the Joan, they both felt like true Herders.

All proceeds from the camp go to youth programs and charities in both Huntington and Pomeroy, Ohio.

  • Bartrum and Brown Camp Set for May 14 at Huntington H.S.

    May 8, 2005

    by Grant Traylor
    Huntington News Network Sportswriter

Huntington (HNN) —A new date and location, but same ol' Marshall background and same great time for the 2005 Bartrum and Brown Camp.

The switch to Huntington High School on May 14 will hopefully accommodate more patrons this year as more NFL players come to show their support of the former Marshall duo of Mike Bartrum and Troy Brown.

The date switches from early summer to spring due in part to the ease of scheduling for NFL veterans as NFL teams hold rookie mini-camps.

One other major factor for the date change was the West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletic Commission's addition of the three-week mini-camp that allows high school coaches to assess their upcoming teams. Last year's Bartrum and Brown Camp fell on the first day of that three-week mini-camp.

The camp is broken down into a pair of three-hour installments. First to seventh graders will take part in drills from 9 a.m. to noon while eighth grade through 12th grade will have their camp from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Camp will feature 15 NFL veterans with 11 being former Marshall players. The most notable non-Marshall affiliated player is Deion Branch, who won the Super Bowl MVP award after tying a Super Bowl record with 11 catches for 133 yards in New England's 24-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Don't think that the Super Bowl won't be a major topic of discussion while at the camp on Saturday.

Six of the 15 NFL players that will be in Huntington for the camp were a part of Super Bowl festivities last season. Philadelphia will have four representatives on hand for the camp. Bartrum and fellow tight end Jeff Thomason will join linebacker Mike Mamula and offensive guard Steve Scuillo, who also played at Marshall.

Branch and Brown, a duo from the Patriots receiving corps, will represent New England's 2005 championship team.

In addition to the Marshall players already named, Chad Pennington will make his second trip to Huntington in as many months. Bartrum and Brown helped out Pennington's 1st and 10 Bowl-A-Thon in April and Pennington is returning the favor among his Marshall constituency.

Pennington will be joined by Tampa Bay center John Wade, Denver wide receiver Darius Watts, St. Louis long snapper Chris Massey, Cleveland safety Chris Crocker, Arizona center Jason Starkey, Cincinnati safety Rogers Beckett and Jacksonville punter Chris Hanson.

  • Bartrum and Brown Football Camp Moves to Joan C. Edwards Stadium

    By Woody Woodrum

    2007 www.Marshall.edu.com

Mike Bartrum of the Philadelphia Eagles, a Pro Bowl player in 2005, and Troy Brown, who has three Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots, are proud to announce their annual camp for children in the Tri-State area is moving to their alma mater, Marshall University. The highly-successful camp, which has been held at Huntington-area high schools for the past four years, will take place on Saturday, May 20, at Marshall’s Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, W.Va.

The Bartrum-Brown Football Camp, sponsored by First Sentry Bank of Huntington, is open to children and teenagers, boys and girls, from the first through the 12th grade. This year, the camp will move to the field that Bartrum and Brown and the 1992 Thundering Herd won the NCAA I-AA National Championship over Youngstown State, then coached by Ohio State’s Jim Tressel, by the score of 31-28. It was MU’s first national title in football and just the second national title in school history. The Herd went on to win two National Championships, seven conference titles and earn seven bowl berths in eight years on that field under coaches Jim Donnan and Bob Pruett between 1991 and 2004.

“We are extremely pleased to be able to move the camps date to early in the year,” said Brown, “as the June date was always a problem for vacationing parents, plus the now three-week summer workouts allowed for high school football in West Virginia. This date also allows more of the former Marshall players and others who are currently in the National Football League to attend the camp, and this has always been a very important part of our camp…the chance for youngsters to meet and learn football skills and life lessons from these heroes they see every week of the fall on television in the NFL.”

The camp has funded youth programs and charities in both Huntington, where Brown has made his home with his family since coming to Marshall in 1991, and also in Pomeroy, Ohio, where Bartrum has a home in the off-season with his family. Marshall University will also profit further from the closer association of the camp at the home of Herd football. “Marshall received about $10,000 last year,” said Brown, “and we anticipate, with the chance to come to camp on the Herd’s new FieldTurf and the earlier date, this will up both the number of campers and the amount of money split between MU and the other organizations we fund. We are glad to have Marshall on board.”

The camp costs $30 per child, $20 for each additional child if pre-registered. The cost is $40, if you wait until the day of camp. The website, www.bartrumandbrown.com, has pre-registration forms and other information on the camp, the charity auction and golf outing for the camp.

Former Marshall players and other NFL players who are confirmed to be in attendance at the camp this year include: Marshall Heisman finalist and quarterback of the New York Jets, Chad Pennington; former MU and Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles tackle, Steve Scuillo; former Herd long-snapper Chris Massey of the St. Louis Rams; J.R. Jenkins, former Herd and retired Baltimore Ravens kicker; former St. Albans Red Dragon, Georgia Bulldog and Marshall tight end Jason Rader of the Miami Dolphins; former Herd All-American defensive end John Goddard, of the Indianapolis Colts; New Orleans Saints receiver Nate Poole, who finished with the Herd in 2000; and former West Virginia running back who now plays for the Cincinnati Bengals, Quincy Wilson.

Players who are scheduled to be at camp include: Mike Barber, Herd wide receiver who played for the Bengals, Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers and entered the National College Football Hall of Fame last summer; Carl Lee, Herd safety who was a member of the 40th Anniversary Minnesota Vikings team, a 12-year pro at cornerback with the Vikes and Saints, as well as the former coach at WV State University (where he is now fund-raising); former MU safety Rogers Beckett, who played for the San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals; former Barboursville and Marshall center Jason Starkey, who is retired from the Arizona Cardinals; Darius Watts, the former Herd receiver who is now with the Denver Broncos; former Cleveland Browns safety Chris Crocker, who was just traded to the Atlanta Falcons; former All-Mid-American Conference center John Wade, who is the starter at for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after playing at Jacksonville; Byron Leftwich, who finished sixth in Heisman voting in 2002 for MU and now quarterbacks the Jacksonville Jaguars; and last, but certainly not least, is a Rand, W.Va. native who played at DuPont High School, then became a Heisman finalist and winner of the Paul Warfield and Fred Biletnikoff receiving awards as an All-American in 1996 and 1997 at Marshall, Randy Moss. Moss is now with the Oakland Raiders, after being drafted in the first round by Minnesota in 1998.

Former WVU QB, Mark Bulger of the St. Louis Rams, is expected to be at the camp, as is David Bowens of the Miami Dolphins. There will be at least wo additional Patriots teammates of Brown’s, including former teammate Adam Vinetari, the kicker who won the Super Bowl for New England and just signed with the Colts, and two more teammates of Bartrum’s from the Eagles, NFC champions in 2004.
